Cub Scout Pack 269

Academic & Sport Overview

Our pack participates in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program. This is a supplemental program of the Boy Scouts of America, and is intended to enhance scholarship and sportsmanship. It is open to all Cubs, Tigers, Wolf, Bear & Webelos.

This program is being implemented to encourage the boys, through recognition, to realize the opportunities for physical, mental and creative expression open to them. This program helps to widen the scope of the young cub to discover more about sportsmanship and scholarship then he may have otherwise.

The Cub may earn his belt loop and/or pin recognition through participation 1) at home, with the family, or 2) within a den or pack, or 3) within the community. This is a parent, child relationship. In our pack parents will be responsible for filling out the forms and turning them into their Den Leaders, the Cub Master or the Awards Chairperson. The dens may choose to do certain activities for den meetings to earn a loop and/or pin.

Check with your son’s teacher(s) at school for any of the items listed below. Your son could be doing basketball in PE at school, have him take the Basketball sheet in and have the teacher sign off on it. Your son’s teacher is also Akela and can sign off on his loops and pins earned. Check out the Academic subjects also, teachers can sign off on these as well.

Below are a list of the sports and academics a boy may participate in.

Sports:

Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Bicycling, Bowling, Fishing, Flag Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Skating, Marbles, Physical Fitness (the pin is a requirement for Webelos Athlete Badge), Roller Skating, Snow ski and board sports, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Ultimate (Frisbee), Volleyball.
NOTE: Archery and BB Guns can only be earned at a Council approved site, like day camp or WEBELOS resident camp.

There are TWO levels of achievement in each of the individual academics and sports areas.
Introduction (BELT LOOP) and
In-depth participation (PIN).
In all cases the Scout is required to DO HIS BEST.

  • BELT LOOPS:   are awarded to boys who complete the three belt loop requirements in an academic subject or sport. Academics belt loops are gold, Sports belt loops are silver and Archery and BB Gun belt loops are copper. Belt loops may be worn with the Cub Scout uniform on the Cub Scout belt. Webelos Scouts who have chosen to wear the tan uniform may still wear the blue Cub Scout belt so as to display the belt loops they have earned.

  • PINS:   Further in-depth participation in an Academic area or Sport, may earn a Cub a pin. The pins cannot be worn on the uniform, but can be worn on the Red Patch Vest. They can be pinned on the Cub Scout Academics and Sports letter "C". This letter is awarded when the cub scout earns his first pin. The letter can be used to display all of the earned Academic and Sport pins

LETTER: C for Cub Scouts -the C letter is given to ANY boy who earns any pin, but is only earned once. A parent no longer has to participate. You may use the letters to pin the appropriate Academic/Sport pins onto.

  • LIMITS for PACK 269: Each boy may earn only ONE belt loop and ONE pin for each sport/academic while in Cub Scout Pack #269. If you want your son to earn more you may do so by donating the cost of the item. The boy must also choose different activities to earn that item again. The Cub Scout Letter also is earned just once - for any of the sports/academics listed above.

  • NOTE: In any sport conducted at Den Meetings, the Three Points of Sportmanship should be stressed at all times:     1. Honesty,    2. Fair Play,    3. Respect for Others

  • REQUIREMENTS: The requirements for each level of each subject area can be found in the CUB SCOUT Academics and Sports Program Guide. The pack has one copy of this and copies have been run off for each den. Please treat your copy of the program as an original...that means make copies of pages for the boys when they want to participate in an activity. Also, Akela must sign off and date the copy of the activity and turn it in so the boy can receive his award. Please be sure the scouts name and den number are also included on the page.
